Theatres in Essex struggle have very strong competition just south of the county, in London. Local theatres can’t match the glamour and star names of the West End, or the quality of the Royal Shakespeare Company of the National Theatre. Despite that, theatre is thriving in Essex. Mercury Theatre, Colchester

A leading regional producing house with a 499-seat main auditorium and a 99-seat studio. Presents original productions alongside high-quality touring drama, comedy and family shows.

Cliffs Pavilion, Southend-on-Sea

The county’s largest venue (around 1,630 seats), hosting major touring musicals, headline comedians and concerts. Impressive sea views and strong technical capacity suit large-scale productions.

Palace Theatre, Westcliff-on-Sea (Southend)

Grade II-listed Edwardian playhouse (1912) with a rich programme of drama, comedy and music. Operated with the Cliffs Pavilion under Southend Theatres.

Dixon Studio, Westcliff-on-Sea

An intimate black-box studio (about 100 seats) located above the Palace Theatre. Ideal for new writing, stand-up, family theatre and workshops.

West Cliff Theatre, Clacton-on-Sea

A much-loved seaside theatre dating from 1899 with a welcoming, community feel. Mixes professional touring shows with strong amateur and youth productions.

Towngate Theatre, Basildon

Busy town-centre venue with two spaces, including the Mirren Studio. Year-round programme spans drama, dance, comedy, live music and community events.

Electric Palace, Harwich

Historic Grade II* cinema (1911) that also hosts live music and special events. Atmospheric period interior and strong local support.

Mercury Theatre Studio, Colchester

The Mercury’s 99-seat studio space for bold, small-scale work. Nurtures emerging artists, community projects and experimental productions.

Chelmsford Theatre, Chelmsford
