Despite what some might think, Essex has some great views.  it’s not all Harlow and Basildon.  It’s ancient woodland, historic buildings and gardens, a rugged coastline and unspoilt countryside.

Candidates for the best view include:

• • Hadleigh Castle: a romantic ruin with royal connections on a small steep hill looking out over the Thames estuary.
  • Mersea Island: reachable by road, except during high tide, and with stunning views over the Blackwater estuary and out over the North sea
  • The house and Gardens at  Audley End: the grandeur of the archetypal Stately Home is more than matched by the grandeur of the landscaped gardens

Despite all that, let’s remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and in all of Essex history the best person at seeing, and sharing, the beauty of Essex is John Constable, our great painter.
