The Rainbow and Dove in Hastingwood near Harlow is, in our humble opinion, the best pub in Essex ( though our research is thorough, and continuing).

Good real ale, good food at sensible prices, a friendly atmosphere, a traditional building and cheerful staff are the plus points.

The lack of noisy background music and noisy youngsters helps, too. There’s no juke box or slot machines either, as the landlord understands that our conversation is sufficient entertanment. Dogs are welcome, provided they are well behaved.
